Ion Beam Lab

The Ion Beam Lab (IBL) is home to UW–Madison’s National Electrostatics Corporation 1.7 MV tandem Pelletron accelerator, which researchers use to assess radiation damage of materials.
This user facility allows researchers to study the degradation of nuclear materials in fusion environments, including those needed for fusion devices. The activities performed in the IBL can help scale fusion materials development for the future, including what is needed for startups and commercial power plants.
